HandiHaler®

My name’s Karen and I’ve got a respiratory condition. Today I’m going to show you how to use your HandiHaler. This is going to be a short, quick guide and I’d also recommend you read the instructions that come with with your inhaler and keep this on you. First, I’m going to cover a few important points about my inhalers, then I’m going to talk you through how to use it, before I show you how to use it. At the end I’ll talk to you about, how to clean and store your inhaler, how to know when its empty and when to order more, and what I do if I accidentally miss a dose, or take too much and what to do if going to a clinic, or the hospital. Some inhalers are given to prevent flare-ups, so you have to take them regularly in order for them to work. They would not prevent flare-ups if used only when your condition got worse. This is because they can take a few days or more to work. HandiHaler is a dry powder inhaler. This means it’s a dry powder that gets inhaled into your lungs. This is your dust cap, this is your mouthpiece and inside you’ll see the chamber where your capsule goes. The green button, once this is closed over. The green button if you press that in, that pierces your capsules. When you get your capsules from the pharmacist always check the expiry date. These are on the side of the box. It’s also found on the sleeve. If they are out of date, return them to your pharmacist. Don’t use them. You should take your inhaler at the same time every day. I find it handy to set an alarm on a mobile phone, just to remind me. Your inhaler can be taken with or without food. You need to remember to sit up straight, or stand up straight and keep your head in a neutral position.

To take your inhaler, open the dust cap and then your mouthpiece. Now, remove a capsule. Taking care not to expose any more than one. If any more’s exposed, throw it in the bin and don’t use it. Place your capsule in your inhaler, and close it over again. Now, push in the green button. You should hear a click when the capsule is pierced. Now you need to breathe out, but not into the inhaler because then you might scatter the drugs (EXHALES). Then place your mouth round the mouthpiece. Forming a seal. Then breathe in as long and as hard as you can and hold that breath for a count of 10. No more than 10. Then breathe out. Now repeat this again, just to ensure that all of the drug have been inhaled. Once you’ve completed that and you’re breathing normally again. Open up. Remove the capsule and check that it has been pierced. You can see the holes. And check there’s no drugs left inside. This is then thrown out. I’ll now demonstrate how to use your inhaler (CLICK, CLICK, EXHALES, SUCKS, EXHALES, EXHALES, SUCKS, EXHALES) Once you’ve taken your inhaler, always remember to brush your teeth or use a mouthwash. This helps prevent any side effects. Such as voice hoarseness and mild infection.

Your inhaler should be cleaned once a month, immediately after you’ve used it. Because it takes 24 hours to dry. rinse the inhaler in warm water. Tip the excess water onto a kitchen towel. And let it air-dry for 24 hours. You should keep your inhaler somewhere it’s not going to get moist or wet and it’s handy to keep it somewhere, that’s going to remind you to take it. I keep it in my handbag, so I know where it is. If you forget to take your inhaler, take it if you remember within an hour or 2. If more than this, miss the dose. And get back on track with the next dose. Do not take the missed dose. If you’ve taken more doses than you should then call a healthcare professional and ask for advice. Remember to order more capsules when you have 5 left. Don’t order before this, because you’ll end up with too many
and the drugs can go out of date. Also remember, if you’re going on holiday to order them in time.

If you’re going to a clinic or hospital, remember to take your inhaler with you. As the healthcare professional will need to know what you’re taking. They also might not have what you’re taking in stock.

Genuair®

My name is Walter, and I have a respiratory condition. So my GP has prescribed a Genuair inhaler. I’m going to show you how to use a Genuair inhaler correctly. The information I’m going to give you is a quick basic guide. And I recommend that you keep and read the instructions that come with your inhaler. First I’m going to give you some important points about your inhaler. Then I’m going to talk you through how to use your inhaler before I show you how to use it. After that, we’ll talk about how to clean and store your inhaler, how to know when your inhaler is running out and when to order another one, what to do if you miss a dose or take too much, and what to do if you are going to the clinic or to the hospital. Some inhalers are given to prevent flare-ups, so take them regularly. They will not prevent flare-ups if you only take them when your condition worsens. This is because they can take some days or more to work. The Genuair inhaler is a dry powder inhaler. This means that the drug is in the form of a powder, which is inhaled into your lungs. On your inhaler this button will be green. You will press and release it prior to use (CLICK). The front has a dosage indicator. This will let me know how many doses I have left. The coloured control window will go green, when ready to use and red after use or if empty. The dust cap has two arrows. Squeeze gently and remove the dust cap, revealing the mouthpiece. Check the expiry date on the box. If the date is expired, return to the Pharmacist.

You should take your inhalers at the same time everyday. You can take your inhaler with, or without food. Stand or sit upright. Keep your head in a neutral position. Remove the inhaler immediately before use, by removing from the pouch by tearing along the notch. Remove the dust cap by gently squeezing the arrows and pulling. Check that there is no dirt or dust on the mouthpiece. Hold the inhaler upright with the green button facing upwards. Press the green button CLICK and release it. Check that your indicator is green. Keep your head in a neutral position. Hold the inhaler away from you, and breathe out as much as you can, but do not breathe back in yet. Put the mouthpiece in your mouth and seal with your lips. Do not bite on the mouthpiece. Inhale quickly and deeply. You will hear a click, and when you do, continue to breathe in. Once you have inhaled in all the way, remove the inhaler from your mouth. And hold your breath for as long as you can, for a maximum of 10 seconds, then breathe out slowly (CLICK, EXHALES SLOWLY, CLICK, INHALES QUICKLY, EXHALES SLOWLY Check that the indicator is now red. If it’s still green you have not inhaled deeply enough. Try again. Replace the dust cap. Brush your teeth, and or rinse your mouth out with water or a mouthwash to prevent side effects. Some inhalers can cause voice hoarseness or mouth infections. Wipe your inhaler mouthpiece once a week with a dry tissue (CLICK).

You should keep it somewhere where it will not get moist or wet. It’s a good idea, to store it somewhere that will help you to remember to take it. The living room or the bedroom are generally speaking good places to store it. If you forget to take your inhaler, take it if you remember within an hour or 2. If more than that, miss the dose. And catch up with your next dose. Do not take your missed dose. If you have taken more doses than you should, you must contact a health care professional. The inhaler has a dose counter on the front. It will count down from 60 to 0 in increments of 10. When you see a red stripe band, this means that you are nearing your last dose and should order a replacement. When the last dose has been prepared, you should inhale as normal. But the green button will lock, because the inhaler is now empty. Order your inhalers only when you need them, because drugs can expire. It is very important that you take your inhalers and a list of all drugs, your most recent repeat prescription would be most helpful, to all clinics and hospital appointments or admissions.

Easibreathe®

Hello my name is Walter, and I suffer from a respiratory condition. So my GP has prescribed the Easi-Breathe inhaler. I’m going to show you how to use the Easi-Breathe correctly. The information I’m going to give you is a quick basic guide. And I recommend that you keep and read the instructions that come with your inhaler. First, I want to cover some important points about your inhaler. I want to talk you through how to use it, before I show you how to use it. Then, after that, I want to talk to you about how to clean and store your inhaler, how to know when your inhaler is finished, and when to order another one, what to do if you mistakenly miss a dose, or take too much and what to do if you have to go to the clinic or the hospital. Some inhalers are given to prevent flare-ups, so use them regularly. They will not prevent flare-ups if only used when you condition worsens. This is because they can take some time to work.

The Easi-Breathe inhaler is a metered-dose inhaler, or MDI for short. The drug is delivered direct to the lungs via an aerosol, which you inhale. This is an Easi-Breathe inhaler. This is the dust cap, which covers the mouthpiece. At the top you have air vents, which must not be covered whilst in use. You only need to test your inhaler when it is new, or if you haven’t used it for 2 weeks or more. To do this you must release 2 puffs of medicine into the air. This is done by opening the mouthpiece, pointing the mouth away from you and unscrewing the top. Placing your forefinger on top of the canister, PUFF PUFF and releasing 2 puffs. When you’re finished, replace the top, close the mouthpiece and your inhaler is ready for use. You should take your inhaler at the same time every day. You can take your inhaler with, or without food. Stand or sit upright. Keep your head in a neutral position. Hold the inhaler upright, taking care not to cover the air vent with your hands. Check the inside and outside of the mouthpiece and remove any dust or other objects. You do not want to inhale these. Breathe out as much as you can, but do not breathe back in. Place the mouthpiece in your mouth and seal it with your lips. You do not need to bite on it. Breathe in slowly and deeply. You’ll hear the inhaler click. When it does, continue to breathe in. Once you have breathed in all the way, hold your breath for as long as you can up to a maximum of 10 seconds. Then breathe out slowly. Replace the mouthpiece cover. If you need to take another puff, wait 30 seconds. Breathe out as much as you can, but do not breathe in. Place the mouthpiece in your mouth, and seal it with your lips. You do not need to bite on it.

Breathe in slowly and deeply. You will hear the inhaler click. When it does, continue to breathe in. Once you have breathed in all the way, hold your breath for a maximum of 10 seconds. Then breathe out slowly. Replace the mouthpiece cover (CLICK, EXHALES, PUFF, INHALES, EXHALES, CLICK). If you need a second dose, wait for 30 seconds and repeat the procedure. (CLICK, INHALES, EXHALES PUFF, INHALES, EXHALES, CLICK). Brush your teeth and / or use a mouthwash to rinse out your mouth, to prevent mouth problems. Some inhalers can cause dry hoarseness, or mild mouth infections. Clean the mouthpiece and inside the rim of the inhaler at least once a week. Do not push the tissue inside the inhaler. Close the dust cap. CLICK You should protect your inhaler from frost, direct sunlight and heat. You should place your inhaler somewhere that will help you to remember it. The living room or the bedroom are good places to store your inhaler. If you forget to take your inhaler, and remember within an hour or 2, take it. If more than that, miss the dose. And catch up with your general dose next time round. Do not take the missed dose. If you have taken more doses than you should, you must contact a health professional for advice. You will know it has run out when it stops spraying. When it nears the end, you should order another. Order your inhalers only when you need them, because drugs can expire. It’s very important that you take your inhalers, and a list of all your prescriptions to the hospital when you’re attending any appointment. A list of your repeat prescriptions would be most helpful.

Accuhaler®

View text alternative

My name is Sam Alcroft, and I have a respiratory condition.
The result of that is I have to use one of these, an Accuhaler. Mine is purple, yours might be a different colour. I’m going to give you a quick and easy guide to using one of these, however I do recommend that you read the instructions fully and keep them somewhere safe, so you can always refer to them. I will cover a few important points about the inhaler, then I will talk you through on how to use it, before I actually demonstrate using it. Finally I will give you some tips on cleaning, storing, reordering, what to do you if you miss or take too much and what to do when you’re visiting a hospital or clinic. Some inhalers are given to prevent flare-ups. You must take these regularly at the same time each day. They would not prevent flare-ups if you used only when your condition got worse. This is because they can take a few days or more to work. The Accuhaler is a dry powder inhaler. This means that the drug comes in the form of a dry powder, which is inhaled directly into your lungs.

The Accuhaler is a nice compact style, has a nice thumb grip. Which you use to slide open, to reveal the mouthpiece. The second lever slides open, and that disperses the drug, ready to use. Your dose counter is this small window here. Starts from 60, working its way down. It’ll go red once it reaches 5. And that gives you an indicator of when to reorder. Once you receive your new inhaler check the expiry date on the box. If you’ve already threw the box away there’s also an expiry date actually on the inhaler as shown here. When you collect your new inhaler it’ll be in a box and also in a foil wrap.

Do not open this until you’re ready to use your inhaler. Tear along the foil wrapping from the jagged edge, throw away the foil. Your inhaler is ready to use. Hold your inhaler in one hand, with your other hand place your thumb in the thumb grip. And push away from you (CLICK) You’ll know when it’s in position when you hear that click. And now you’ve exposed your mouthpiece. To load your inhaler, slide the lever down on the side. Always remember to keep your inhaler in an upright position. Slide the lever down until you hear it click (CLICK). Like so Your inhaler is ready for action. Hold the inhaler away from you, and exhale as much as possible. Remember and not to breathe out, into the inhaler. Like so. (EXHALES) This will give you a nice deep breath in, when ready. Once you do that, put the mouth piece to your mouth and seal it with your lips. And take a big deep breath in. Take the inhaler away from your mouth and hold your breath for up to 10 seconds. After 10 seconds you can exhale slowly. Close the inhaler by placing your thumb in the thumb grip and pulling it back towards you (CLICK) This will also reset the lever. Now I’m gonna show you how to do it. (CLICK, CLICK, EXHALES, INHALES DEEPLY, EXHALES SLOWLY, CLICK CLICK).

After using your inhaler it’s always recommended that you brush your teeth, or use a mouth wash. The side effects of the inhaler is that you may have a mild infection, or a voice hoarseness. Clean your inhaler at least once a week, with a dry tissue. Simply just brush over the mouthpiece (CLICK) and close. Always keep your inhaler somewhere that won’t get moist or wet. It’s also a good idea to keep it somewhere that you would remember to take it, such as your bedside cabinet or kitchen table. If you forget to take your inhaler, and it’s only one or two hours then that’s fine. Take it. If it’s longer than two hours, then just skip it and get back on track on your next dose. If you take too much, then contact a healthcare professional for advice. The inhaler has a dose counter. It counts down from 60 to 0. The numbers turn red when you have 5 left. This is when should order a new one and not before. As they may expire. Finally, when popping along to a clinic or a hospital visit. It’s always handy to take along your inhalers and any other prescribed medicine that you may be on, to have them checked out by a healthcare professional.

Easyhaler®

Hi my name’s Debra and I have a respiratory condition and my GP has prescribed me the Easyhaler. The information that I’m going to give you is a quick basic guide. First off, I recommend that you read and keep the instructions that come with your inhaler. First I’m going to cover a few important points about my inhalers, then I’m going to talk you through how to use it, before I show you how to use it. At the end I’ll talk to you about how I clean and store my inhaler. How I know when it’s empty, and when to order another, what to do if I accidentally miss a dose, or take too much. Or what to do when you actually go to the clinic or the hospital. Some inhalers are given to prevent flare-ups, so take them regularly. They will not prevent flare-ups if only used when your condition gets worse. This is because they can take a few days or more to work. The Easyhaler is a dry powder inhaler. This means that the drug is in the form of a powder which you inhale into your lungs. So this is your inhaler. It has a dust cap And it has a section at the top which actually dispenses the medicine. Check the expiry date on the box. If expired, return to the pharmacist. You should take your inhalers at the same time everyday. And you can take your inhalers with or without food. Stand, or sit upright. And make sure that your head’s in a neutral position. Remove the dust cap, by pulling it away from the inhaler. Shake the inhaler vigorously up and down, 3 to 5 times. Hold your inhaler with your thumb at the bottom and the index finger at the top.Press the top of the inhaler down with your index finger, this releases the dry power into the inhaler. (In this case the top is orange but your inhaler maybe another colour) You should hear a loud click. Hold the inhaler away from you and breathe out as much as you can. Do not breathe back in yet. Do not breathe into the inhaler, because this may actually scatter the powder within the inhaler. Put the mouthpiece between your teeth and seal with your lips. Do not bite down on the inhaler. Inhale quickly and deeply. Once you’ve inhaled all the way, remove the inhaler from your mouth. And hold your breath for as long as you can, for a maximum of 10 seconds. And then breathe out slowly. Wipe the mouthpiece with a clean dry tissue. Replace the dust cap And it’s important that you brush your teeth and / or rinse your mouth with water or mouthwash to prevent side effects. This is because your inhalers can cause voice hoarseness or mild mouth infections. (CLICK CLICK, EXHALES, INHALES, EXHALES) If you need to take another puff, then just repeat those steps. Once a week, take a tissue and wipe round about the mouthpiece. You should keep your inhaler somewhere, where it will not get moist or wet. Keep it somewhere, where you’ll remember to take it. So somewhere like your bedroom or the living room, somewhere where you’ll see it, is a good idea. If you forget to take your inhaler and you remember within the next hour or 2 then you can go ahead and take it. However, if it’s longer than this then miss the dose. And get back on track with the next dose. Do not take the missed dose. If you press the top of the inhaler twice by accident. (CLICK CLICK), what to do is just tap the powder out into your hand. And start from the beginning. If you’ve taken too much of your inhaler you must contact a health professional for advice. Your inhaler has a dose counter on the side. And this will count down from 200 or 100, in increments of 10 to 0. Once it gets to 20 it’ll be highlighted in red and this is an indication of when to actually replace your inhaler. It’s important that you actually only order your inhaler when you actually need them, because the drugs can expire. When you’re going to the hospital or the clinic it’s really important that you take all your medicines with you, and your inhalers. Normally what I do is I’ll take a repeat prescription with me, because that’s usually the easiest way.

Please note – your own inhaler device may be a different colour than the one shown but the way you use it will be the same.

Metered dose inhaler with spacer

View text alternative

If you have difficulty using your metered dose inhaler, you could ask your doctor or nurse for a spacer. There are large volume spacers and small volume spacers and you can use one or more breath with each. I will show you the one breath method with the small spacer and the multiple breath method with the large spacer. To use the small spacer, you remove the cap from the inhaler. Check again no dirt or dust, same with the spacer device. Check that there’s no dirt or dust. Shake the inhaler, four to five times. Pop it in the end of the spacer, like so. Put the spacer in your mouth. and as you start to breathe. Press the inhaler, big breath in and then hold for a count of ten like this (EXHALES, PUFF, EXHALES). To use the large volume spacer you have to connect the two halves. There is a notch in the spacer. And you just line it up (CLICK) and put it together like so. Then again you get your inhaler and I like to call this shake, rattle and roll. Shake then inhaler to mix it. Rattle the spacer a little bit to make sure the valve’s working. Pop your inhaler in the end. Put it up to your mouth. Press the inhaler once and then just breathe in and out, normally for four or five breaths. Like this (RATTLE, PUFF, BREATHING… BREATHING CONTINUES). Refer to the manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning and renewing your spacer device.

Hello my name is Liz and I have a chest condition that is treated with inhalers. I’m going to show you how to use a metered-dose inhaler correctly. The information that I’m going to give you is a quick, basic guide. I recommend that you keep and read the patient information leaflet that comes with your inhaler.

First, I’m going to cover a few important points about your inhaler, then I will talk you through how to use it and then I will demonstrate how to use it. At the end I will talk to you about how you clean and store your inhaler, how you know when it’s getting empty, and when to reorder another, what to do if you miss a dose, or accidentally take too much and what to do about going to the hospital or clinic. Some inhalers take a few days or more to work, therefore I have to take it as prescribed to prevent flare-ups. The drugs in the metered-dose inhaler, or MDI are in aerosol form that you breathe into your lungs. The metered-dose inhaler has a dust cap. You squeeze and pull off the side. You have the mouthpiece and the canister. Now this metered-dose inhaler does not have a dose counter. Some metered-dose inhalers do have a counter. This may be on the front, or on the back. When you get a new inhaler you should check the expiry date on the bottom of the box and if it’s out-of-date, return it to the pharmacist. The expiry date will also be on the canister of your inhaler. When your inhaler is new, or has not been used a few days it’s important that you prepare it for use. To do this, you shake the inhaler, remove the dust cap and spray 2 puffs into the atmosphere, (PUFF) like so. (PUFF) Taking care not to spray it on anyone and then replace the dust cap. Some inhalers require more sprays. Read the instruction leaflet that comes with your inhaler. You should take your inhalers at the same time every day. They can be taken with, or without food. It is best to stand, or sit upright and keep your head in a neutral position. When you’re ready to use your inhaler, remove the dust cap. Check the mouthpiece and make sure that there’s no dirt or fluff in there. If there is, remove it. Hold the inhaler with your thumb at the bottom, fingers at the top and shake the canister 4 to 5 times. To use your inhaler, you breathe all the way out (EXHALES), like so – and before you breathe back in, you put the inhaler in your mouth. Seal with your lips and as you start to breathe in, press the inhaler once, and breathe steadily and deeply all the way in and then hold your breath for up to 10 seconds and just breathe out normally. If you need to take another puff, then wait 30 seconds and then repeat. When you’re finished with the inhaler, clean with a clean dry tissue, replace the cap. And brush your teeth, or rinse your mouth.

So now I am going to demonstrate this. So you remove the cap, checking the mouthpiece, no dirt or fluff. Placing the thumb at the bottom, fingers at the top, shake the inhaler (EXHALES, PUFF, INHALES, EXHALES). Keep your inhaler away from direct sunlight, heat or frost. Store it somewhere where you will remember to take it. The living room and bedroom are generally good places to store inhalers. If you forget to take your inhaler, take it if you remember within 1 to 2 hours. If not, miss the dose and get back on track with the next dose. You do not need to take the missed dose. If you’ve taken too much of your inhaler, then call a healthcare professional for advice. You will know your inhaler has run out when it stops spraying. If you have an inhaler that does not have a dose counter, then you may want to keep a spare. If your inhaler does have a dose counter, then you may want to put in a repeat prescription when you have 10 doses left. It’s really important you don’t over order medications, because drugs can expire. When going to the hospital or clinic, it’s really important that you take your inhalers and list of medications with you.

Inhalator ciśnieniowy z dozownikiem, MDI, zawiera lek w formie aerozolu. Właśnie ten lek wdychasz do płuc.
Ważne elementy inhalatora:

  • Osłona-ściśnijjejbokiipociągnij,abyzdjąć,

  • Zbiornik,

Jeśli inhalator jest przeterminowany, zwróć go do apteki. Data ważności znajduje się także na zbiorniku.

Przed użyciem nowego inhalatora otwórz opakowanie i zdejmij plastikową powłokę.

Warto trzymać go w widocznym miejscu, przykładowo na stoliku nocnym.

Umieść go w ten sposób na zakończeniu spejsera. Umieść spejser w ustach. Gdy zaczniesz brać wdech, naciśnij inhalator. Weź głęboki wdech. Wstrzymaj oddech i policz do 10.

Przysuń go do ust. Naciśnij raz inhalator i zacznij naturalnie nabierać i wypuszczać powietrze, wykonując cztery-pięć oddechów.
